Scotland, Pro Nuclear Energy |
|
The SNP government of Scotland has suddenly become open to nuclear power issuing a statement Friday that they were "perfectly open" to the use of the Hunterston and Torness stations.
The Minister for Energy, Fergus Ewing told MSP's that nuclear is a "rational case" and that the need to secure supply of power is a priority goal. Jackson Carlaw, the spokesman for the Conservative climate change agenda said "This is an unexpected yet welcome U-turn from the SNP government. Coming after years of uncompromising anti-nuclear rhetoric."
Campaign members for FoE (Friends of the Earth) were stunned at the statement. Stan Blackley, chied executive of the movement was quoted saying it was "deeply disturbing" and noted the predominant campaign platform the SNP used to gain their May landslide victory was a promise to achieve 100% renewable energy use in Scotland by 2020.
The SNP has maintained that this does not represent a policy shift of any kind as they still stand against new nuclear development in Scotland.
